For my first blog, I would like to introduce myself and share why I am passionate about what I do. You’ve probably read my profile already, and know I have over 20 years in natural health. It’s brought me a lot of satisfaction and the best moments are when my clients improve their health and live happier, more active lives.

The case for changing lifestyle factors comes from the World Health Organisation – a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health, The WHO.

Did you know the WHO recognises that chronic diseases caused by lifestyle factors are the leading cause of deaths everywhere in the world, except sub-Saharan Africa. The fact that many of these chronic diseases are preventable is an open opportunity for us to learn to live better. By chronic diseases I am talking about some of our biggest killers; cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, risks are raised on high blood pressure, lipid disorders, and so on. The WHO goes on to say these diseases “ are, for the most part, entirely preventable” with lifestyle adjustments.

Feel better and age better

Easy, small adjustments, create easy change that powerfully builds upon itself. Under my guidance, clients find good ways to manage or eliminate the issues that brought them in. Using my protocol, I see clients go on to retirement feeling great, and without manifesting chronic health conditions. They feel better and age better into a healthy, happy, FUN-ctional retirement.

I stepped out of Pharmacy dispensary work – my first job – 20 twenty years ago. Back then, patients were accumulating medications and typically not progressing towards healthier lifestyles. I was concurrently working with people in a healing practice I started, working with them in a pure health capacity. With an easy recipe of small lifestyle tweaks, clients were creating long term change, reducing their medications, finding more ease, getting healthier, happier and aging better. I realised I had successfully navigated them through what I call ‘sniper alley’.

Sniper alley is an opportunity to change your destiny. It’s the period of time from your mid 40’s through to your mid 50’s. In the early years, natural youthful energy can absorb the consequences of lifestyle choices. Life constantly overloads the body and in the 40’s and 50’s, chronic diseases typically start to express themselves. In the field of epigenetics, lifestyle choices are shown to influence gene expression. This is the study of nature and nurture.  When the system is stressed, the less desirable genes can express themselves. When the system is supported, chronic diseases can be avoided. For instance, I inherited the Alzheimer’s gene, from both parents, and even so, my DNA profile shows I have a one in 10 chance of expressing the gene, with my lifestyle choices influencing the outcome. Most diseases of degeneration are preventable with diet and lifestyle change (WHO).

From unhealthy to running half marathons

Here’s a quote from a client I successfully took through sniper alley. He was carrying a lot of weight, was in pain and was looking at a bleak future with several diseases of degeneration that were already beginning to manifest. “I’m smashing through so many glass ceilings now, it’s ridiculous. I used to think I would be happy if I was under 100kg, I’m 72kg now. I used to focus on being able to walk, then jog. I’m not only running half marathons now, I’m now focusing on my time. I want to run the next one in under two hours and that’s faster than I ever thought I would be” he said. “I'm past refining what I eat, I’m now focusing on when I eat. It’s definitely a process and I didn’t ever think I would keep going like this and I wonder what’s next. Learning how to move has been important. When I’m injured my body heals now. I had that knee pain, in the past I would be worried, gone to the doctor and had physiotherapy. I just took a week off training, and it is gone. A week, that’s not much.  My body knows what to do now. I can rely on my body now”. “I meet people I used to work with 20 years ago and they can’t work it out, because I look better now than I did 20 years ago. They want to know what I’m doing”.

The process of implementing lifestyle tweaks to prevent or reverse chronic is ongoing and the benefits build in time. Are you up for the challenge, to start the process of slowly getting to know your body more and finding out what works for you?
